Deeply affordable and supportive housing provider Indwell had a busy Tuesday in Hamilton.

This morning, the charity broke ground on its first family apartments, 23 two and three-bedroom units under construction at the former Royal Oak Dairy site.

Over the noon hour, Hamilton City Council’s planning committee approved the planning instruments for Indwell to construct a four-storey 50 unit affordable housing project on the site of the Wentworth Baptist Church at 120 Wentworth Street North.

Rev. Dr. Seán McGuire, Lead Pastor of the Church, wrote the plan is win-win for the congregation and the community.

“Indwell’s adaptive reuse plan for the property, developed in partnership with our congregation, responds to the needs of the city, particularly the Gibson and Lansdale neighbourhood. Faced with an aging building, our congregation discerned several potential avenues forward that could serve the public good, in line with Scripture’s command to ‘seek the peace and prosperity of the city’ (Jeremiah 29:7).”

The church sanctuary will be renovated and serve both the congregation, the new residents, and the broader community.

All community leaders and delegations to council supported the project. A reflection of the esteem Indwell has earned.

Ward 3 Councillor Nrinder Nann praised the project, noting that it is one of many affordable housing units moving forward to construction in part because of reforms this term of council implemented to prioritize affordable housing.

“We are demonstrating the municipality’s commitment to being part of the solution and making sure that affordable housing is getting built in our community.”

The planning committee decision will be ratified at next Wednesday City Council ratification meeting.
