The Hamilton Public Library may stop using Elon Musk’s social media platform in the coming months.

On Wednesday (Feb 19), the Library’s Board directed Chief Librarian Paul Takala to review whether the Library should continue using X (formerly Twitter).

HPL Board Member Nicolas van Velzen says the platform as “become a toxic atmosphere.”

“I’m not sure that library members are well served by having to go through that as a source of information.”

Chief Librarian Paul Takala says the Library will review how it uses X.

X now requires registration to read posts, which was not required when the platform was known as Twitter.

“We shouldn’t be, ideally, making people have to sign into something to get information from us,” he said, noting the Library uses many platforms.

The Hamilton Police Service and the City of Hamilton both use X as primary communication channels.
