Voters in Hamilton West-Ancaster-Dundas were the most motivated among Hamilton ridings to get their votes cast early.

Elections Ontario held three days of advance polls over the weekend.

On Monday, the agency stated that 6.14 percent of eligible voters cast ballots at advance polls.

This is a decrease from 2022 when 9.92% of voters cast advance poll ballots. The 2022 general election had ten days for advance polls, meaning more ballots were cast per day this election.

Hamilton West-Ancaster-Dundas advance poll turnout was 8.15 percent, with 7,749 ballots cast. During the 2022 general election, 12,959 advance ballots were cast in HWAD, 13.8 percent of eligible voters.

Flamborough-Glanbrook advance turnout was 7.91 percent, with 7,919 ballots cast. During the 2022 election, 12,163 advance ballots were cast, 12.9 percent of eligible voters.

Hamilton Centre advance turnout was 6.37 percent, with 5,007 ballots cast.

This is an increase compared to the 2023 by-election when 5.2 percent of registered voters cast advance ballots.

During the 2022 election, 8,535 advance ballots were cast, 11.0 percent of eligible voters.

Hamilton East – Stoney Creek advance turnout was 6.12 percent, with 5,461 ballots cast. During the 2022 election, 10,653 advance ballots were cast, 12.2 percent of eligible voters..

Hamilton Mountain advance turnout was 5.86 percent, with 4,926 ballots cast. During the 2022 election, 9,068 advance ballots were cast, 11.0 percent of eligible voters.

Advance Turnout Has Increased While Overall Turnout Declines

The popularity of advance polls has increased in recent elections, with records being broken. At the same time, overall voter turnout continues to decrease with new record lows each election.

There were approximately 1.07-million advance ballots cast in the 2022 Ontario election, up from 700,000 in 2018.

Despite the increase in advance voting, voter turnout plummed to 43.5 percent, setting a new all-time low.

Election day is Thursday, February 27. Polls are open from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
