There have been many developments at the Barton and Tiffany site, where the City plans to create a low-barrier outdoor emergency shelter consisting of 40 portable tiny shelter units and ancillary portables.

Last week, the Ministry of Labour issued four orders against the City, bringing work to a halt.

On Monday, the City held a press conference to explain its version of events.

This week, on Tuesday, the City had an electrical contractor on the edge of the property.

The contractor was installing a new pedestrian signal on Barton Street West at Caroline Street North. This prompted a Ministry of Labour inspection.

On Wednesday, a Ministry of Labour official met with City staff on site.

Yesterday, Thursday, the City stated it would have a general contractor in place next week, and will be proactively communicating with the Ministry going forward.

Today’s Update: City says it has met compliance and will resume construction work on Dec 2

The City says construction will resume on the Barton / Tiffany site on December 2.

Rankin Construction Inc. has been hired to lead the site works.

The City has also provided the Ministry with a list of designated substances, as Section 11 of the Occupational Health and Safety Act requires.

In the written City update, staff wrote the installation of pedestrian crossing signals around the site is an “unrelated project.”

“Construction related to the Barton-Tiffany temporary outdoor shelter is anticipated to
start on Monday December 2.”
