Hamilton Mayor Andrea Horwath sat down with CHCH-TV this morning for a five-and-a-half minute interview.
Here are some of the things which I found noteworthy.
The few questions to the mayor were on the topics of shootings, crime, and vehicle thefts. Mayor Horwath stated what is happening is terrifying and disturbing. She noted other municipalities are experiencing increases in crime.
On encampments:
The Mayor spoke about her plan to have sanctioned encampment sites with wraparound supports.
The Mayor emphasized that “wraparound supports” will be at the sites, and she wants them open “before the snow flies.”
“The idea is to try to get people into a more stable environment where they can start to receive some of the services that will help transition them into permanent housing. We just don’t want to build more and more shelters,” Mayor Horwath stated.
“We’re hoping that this will help not only to get people, a more stable place when the weather gets bad as the snow flies but, more importantly, provide those wraparound services. And while we’re doing that, we are also trying to get from the provincial government commitment on about 400 units of both transitional housing, supportive housing and affordable housing.”
Mayor Horwath says the sanctioned sites will help neighbourhoods and communities that want to “have a safer or a better experiences at their parks or whether it’s the business districts, there’s just no doubt that, that things need to change. And that’s why I put the directive forward.”
