Hamilton’s City Council will debate HSR fare discounts, again, on October 15, 2024.

Responding to Council questions on September 4, HSR Director Maureen Cosyn Heath stated the report will summarize public feedback regarding the new Fare Assist program that provides a 30 percent discount to lower-income Hamiltonians.

The implementation of the Fare Assist program coincided with the end of a “Voluntary Pay Program” that permitted anyone with a mobility device to board HSR buses for free.

The change has been heavily criticized by the City’s Accessibility Committee for Persons with Disabilities and various advocacy groups.

“Several hundred survey respondents have provided feedback and input that is currently being analyzed,” Cosyn Heath said.

“We are, of course, aware of some of the concerns that have been raised through the delegation process and are working with the data that we have available to us to bring back a report to let you know of recommended program changes or lack thereof, or next steps for the existing fare assist pilot.”

The October 15 meeting will include an opportunity for public delegations. Interested persons can register to speak on the City website.
