This term’s City Council moved quickly after their election to address a growing number of vacant CityHousing units that previous council declined to repair. In March 2023, $5.7-million was approved to repair 467 units of housing with a goal of completing all repairs by the end of November 2024.
This week, CityHousing Hamilton stated repairs are complete for 369 of the units.
Ward 3 Clr Nrinder Nann praised the work of CHH staff, thanking them for their “ongoing diligent attention in working steadfastly” to complete the repairs. “78 percent of the 467 is substantive.”
CityHousing plans to issue updates near the end of October and Novemeber.

Has money been allocated for future upkeep so that we aren’t in this position again? Do you remember any details about when the previous council declined to repair the units? Like month/year and votes?
CityHousing is partnering with trades training to increase its maintenance capabilities.
There were no votes to maintain units, which is the issue. Much like our billions of dollars in infrastructure deficit, upkeep of units wasn’t done by past councils.
Eventually, the backlog reached 467 units in the middle of a housing affordability crisis.
Ok, I misunderstood. Yes that definitely is an issue. IIRC three current councillors were on the CHH board last term.
