The Commonwealth Games may be done as an event (they have no 2026 Games host), but just in case, I’m still monitoring the Commonwealth Sport website for any signs that a Hamilton bid reemerges.

On Friday, the website posted a story about the inaugural 1930 Games in Hamilton.

It focuses on how Bobby Robinson organized the Games, which was no small feat at a time when international passenger travel was done by ship, long-distance communication was conducted by letter mail, and there was an ongoing global financial crisis.

The story details how the teams travelled to Hamilton: a city in the middle of the North American continent.

As a Hamiltonian who attended the old Prince of Wales school, looked out at Ivor Wynne Stadium, and has swam countless time at Jimmy Thompson pool, I enjoyed the legacy of those long-ago games.

I always enjoy nostalgic looks back at Hamilton when it was a globally significant ambitious city.
