Ontario’s Conservative government removed many of the green building standards implemented by the previous Liberal government, most notably in 2019, removing the requirement for new homes and condos to include electric vehicle charging infrastructure.
The City of Toronto’s Green Standard is more stringent than the Ontario Building Code.
The Residential Construction Council of Ontario plans to challenge Toronto’s ability to implement higher standards as ultra vires, beyond the powers granted to Toronto by the provincial government.
The City of Hamilton is considering adopting its own Green Building Standards.
If the Courts strike down Toronto’s building standards, the decision will effectively stop Hamilton from implementing similar measures.
